How Do I Know If My Home Is Bugged?
All of us expect to live our lives with the protection from unlawful spying and surveillance.
Invading a person’s privacy is a serious violation, and offenders can be expected to be dealt with harshly in UK courts.
Crimes such as stalking, harassment and voyeurism are offences that can be used to prosecute someone who is found to have illegally spied on someone, in bugging their house, office or car.
Even the Police and law enforcement cannot simply bug someone’s home without first obtaining the relevant authorities and permissions.
If you feel like someone is watching, you are likely wondering, how do I know if my home is bugged?
Obviously we recommend: GET A BUG SWEEP ON YOUR HOME!
But there are few things you can do eliminate the need to have a bug sweep car
carried out on your home.
Looking For The Signs for an Electronic Bug In Your Home
But before you embark on having an electronic bug sweep completed, consider these issues that may help you decide if your house is bugged.
If you or someone in your house has been;
Accused or been charged with an offence by the police
Been involved in a relationship with a controlling narcissistic abusive partner
Involved in a civil court case with an external 3rd party
Dealing in politics
Own or manage a business
Recently disciplined by your employer
Handling the estate of a deceased family member involving siblings
A subject of private investigators
Problems with neighbours
Family issues
Going through a divorce
How to know if your house is bugged
There's no need to drive yourself mad!
Here’s how you can find out if your house is bugged:
1. Are You suffering From Leaked Private Conversations
Spy bugs, surveillance devices and spyware tools are meant to be small and invisible for covert operations. So it is highly likely you won’t know they exist in your home.
The tell-tale sign of their existence can come from leaked information at the workplace either through emails, text messages, or personal conversations.
If a co-worker talks about something you only shared with one trusted party over a call at your place, that is a sign your phone is tapped or bugged.
If not, then there is a possibility of a covert listening device planted in your home that is listening to your private conversations.
2. Check for a break-in / burglary
Has someone broken into your house but nothing has been stolen? Are there any signs of property interference?
Check for drywall dust on the floor? Can you see any marks on a window to signal any forceful entry?
These are signs that someone may have installed spyware at your place.
The next move is to leave your home and report the matter to the police.
If you do decide at this point to have an electronic search of your home completed by specialists, you will need to ensure your home is secure after they have carried out the bug sweep. Get the locks changed, install an alarm and CCTV. Make your home more secure!
3. Is Your Phone Hacked?
Landline telephones can be vulnerable to wiretaps and monitoring. Thankfully, if you are careful enough, you’d know something is wrong.
First off, get your landline provider to check the security of the line and carry out an investigation, both locally and on the network.
If your telephone line is bugged it can sometimes produce weird squealing and crackling sounds. Also keep an ear out for volume changes during calls which could indicate a sign of tampering.
Mobile phones too can get hacked and monitored, but this will need a separate method of analysis to determine if the mobile phone is compromised.
Once you detect deleted messages, call logs, and other weird changes in your mobile’s behaviour, it can indicate there is spyware on the device monitoring who you call, what you type as well as tracking your movements.
4. Strange holes in devices
Lamps, smoke detectors, and clocks are strategic places for spying devices and electronic bugs. We see these very often, and they are easily purchased off the internet.
Just remember, the device (micro camera, covert microphone can be tiny) but they all need power, either a local power source wired on, or a portable battery power supply.
Because all surveillance tools require power in order to transmit data. The chances are high that some of your electronic gadgets will be the first place to be bugged.
5. Listen for strange noises!
Some bugs (mostly cheap ones) produce weird and odd sounds as they send data to their destination. You can easily catch their hum or buzz if you turn off all your electronics and just listen attentively.
6. Switch off the lights
Secret camera recording devices emit infrared (IR) light while collecting and transferring data.
The problem is that IR is invisible to the naked eye. However, you can use an IR anti bugging device to identify the location of such clandestine equipment.
7. Sweep the house with RF bug, GPS, or camera detectors
There is a dearth pf anti spying devices and gadgets on the market, but unfortunately, we do advocate any of them. If you are not familiar with the method of transmitting and collecting data via a covert device, then you will find yourselves holding a de-bugging device that has flashing lights and beeps and won’t have a clue what its buzzing at.
And the problem is, most of these devices are usually made in China and have no real helpful instructions in how the device identifies rogue signals or even what type of signals it is indicating.
There are some cost-effective RF detectors available, more premium ones and of course, high-end RF detectors. Something for every budget. But do you know how to operate them?
In places like offices and homes, you may want to put your phones and other innocent electronics away to avoid the spyware detector from reporting false signals.
Does the law allow the bugging of someone’s home, office or vehicle without their consent?
In many countries including the UK, the law is pretty clear and states the following:
You cannot install surveillance software on someone’s electronics. This rule exempts business and organisation phones and computers.
Anyone can hire a private investigator to follow, monitor, or eavesdrop on you as long as the process is done without violating any civil or criminal laws.
Individuals are allowed to install spy cameras inside their own property without informing visitors or guests of their presence. It’s your home, you can do what you want.
Police and law enforcement are governed by laws, regulations and guidelines that protects the public from these organisations simply placing a listening device or tracker into a suspects property or vehicle. They are obliged to follow a set of rules and obtain permissions and authorities before they mount a surveillance operation against someone.
Finally
Knowing if your home is bugged is the first step to ensuring your safety and privacy rights are not violated.
Believing you are being spied on, surveilled or bugged, is a very distressing place to be. Buying the most expensive spy bug detector will not provide the peace of mind you are seeking
For a matter of such importance, you need a counter surveillance specialist. A bug sweeping company that has experience of both using and installing spy equipment, and of course finding spying devices.
You wouldn’t buy scissors and a comb to cut your own hair? You go to a hairdresser or barber, right?
It may be an expensive decision, but you can’t put a price on your privacy and mental well-being.
